Standing Rock Victory!
Transition Initiative Kenora applauds the December 4, 2016 decision of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to deny the permit to Energy Transfer Partners to cross Lake Oahe and to undertake a new environmental impact statement for the Dakota Access Pipeline.
The decision is a welcome, immediate relief to everyone who has been watching this situation unfold over the past many months, and we sincerely thank the Obama administration and the Department of the Army for finding a temporary resolution that protects human lives and the environment.
The determination of the people of the Standing Rock Sioux Nation has taught the world profound lessons about the power of peaceful, focused resistance to defend natural laws and protect land and water. This land defence effort has given birth to new solidarity among diverse nations from around Turtle Island and the world and has been an opportunity for Indigenous peoples to learn, to lead, and to educate.
We are grateful to the people of Standing Rock for teaching us grace, the power of peaceful, prayerful resistance, and how to work well in alliances that transcend racial, cultural, and national boundaries.
